There's a scene that's becoming increasingly common: someone at a meeting asks for something other than alcohol, and it's no longer just sparkling water with lemon.
THC beverages have arrived in Mexico and are filling a void: that of the social drink that isn't beer.
What exactly is a cannabis beverage?
It's a drink—flavored water, tonic, soda—into which cannabinoids have been incorporated through emulsion.
That word, emulsion, is the technical key. Cannabinoids are fat-soluble: they don't mix with water, just like oil. To get them into a drink, they must be reduced to microscopic particles and stabilized in the liquid.
The process is called nanoemulsion, and it's not just a manufacturing trick. It has a direct consequence on how it feels: smaller particles are absorbed faster.
Why a drink hits differently than a gummy
This is the part that surprises people.
| Gummy | Beverage | |
|---|---|---|
| Onset | 30–120 min | 15–45 min |
| Peak | 2–3 h | 1–2 h |
| Duration | 4–8 h | 2–4 h |
| Curve | Strong rise, slow decline | Even rise, even decline |
A solid needs to dissolve in the stomach before anything happens. A liquid is already dissolved and moves faster to the intestine. Add nanoemulsion, and you have a much shorter curve on both ends.
Practical translation: a gummy commits your afternoon. A drink occupies a short time. They are tools for different moments. The complete mechanism is in how absorption works.
The point almost no one mentions: the social dose
Cannabis beverages usually come in low doses, and that's not a limitation. It's the design.
High Tide Social Tonic contains 5 mg of THC and 7 mg of HHC per 355 ml can. Twelve milligrams of cannabinoids, in a format you drink in twenty minutes while chatting.
Compare it to a 100 mg gummy, and the difference in intent is obvious. One is made for an experience; the other, for a short while.
The HHC in the mix is no coincidence either. Its profile is described as clearer than that of pure THC, which fits the objective: to keep you present in the conversation. If you want details on what HHC is and where it comes from, it's in the cannabinoid dictionary.
Why it's growing right now
Three things are happening at the same time.
The sober curious movement. More and more people are reducing alcohol without wanting to give up the social ritual. Holding something, toasting, having a drink in hand — that matters more than it seems, and a glass of water doesn't solve it.
The hangover. An inelegant and enormously persuasive argument.
The format. A can is discreet, dosed, and familiar. It requires no explanation or ritual. It looks like any other drink.
How to drink it without making a mistake
- One can. Wait 45 minutes. The onset is faster than a gummy, but it's not immediate.
- Do not mix it with alcohol. The combination amplifies both unpredictably. It's a rule, not a suggestion.
- Chilled and gently shaken. The emulsion may settle slightly at rest.
- Watch your pace. The biggest risk of a drink isn't its potency: it's that it's consumed like a soft drink. Three cans in a row are 36 mg, and that's no longer a social dose.
- Make it clear which is which. If there are other drinks on the table, make sure no one takes yours by mistake.
Flavor: no longer a necessary evil
The first cannabis beverages tasted like what they were. They tasted like plant.
Modern emulsion solved much of that, and today the combinations are cocktail-like: mango with dragon fruit and acai, strawberry with kiwi and ginger, tangerine with grapefruit and cardamom. Cardamom, in particular, is a bartender's ingredient — it's there to provide bitter structure, not to disguise anything.
What you take away
- Nanoemulsion is what allows cannabinoids to be put into water and what speeds up absorption.
- Onset 15–45 min, duration 2–4 h. Much shorter than a gummy.
- Low doses are intentional: the goal is social, not the experience.
- The real risk is not potency — it's drinking it at the pace of a soft drink.
- Never with alcohol.
