You see a 100 mg gummy and a 50 mg gummy. Which one do you take?
Short answer: probably neither of them whole.
The dosage in an edible is not chosen by the number on the package, but by how much of that piece you are going to consume. And that's where almost everyone goes wrong—not by taking too much, but by not knowing they could take less.
The scale, in real terms
These ranges are for THC. CBD works on a different scale and we'll discuss it separately.
| Dose | Profile | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2.5 mg | Microdose. Very subtle effect, almost no perceptible alteration | Absolute first-timer, or functional daytime use |
| 2.5–5 mg | Mild. Noticeable relaxation, slightly altered perception | Beginners. Start here |
| 5–15 mg | Moderate. Clear and sustained effect | Established tolerance |
| 15–30 mg | Strong. Significant alteration | Frequent use |
| 30 mg+ | Very strong | High tolerance and real experience |
Look at the table, then look at a 100 mg gummy. That number is not a dose: it's a container. It contains between 10 and 40 doses, depending on who you are.
Fractioning is the complete skill
If you take away one idea from this text, let it be this: knowing how to cut your edible is more valuable than knowing how to choose it.
The Full Spectrum CBD Gummy is designed exactly this way. It's a 3.5 g unit with 100 mg of full spectrum, designed to be fractioned into four doses of 25, 50, 75, or 100 mg. It's not a gummy that "can also be cut": it's a gummy built for that purpose.
With THC, the criteria change because the scale is much narrower. In this case, it's convenient for the product to already come divided:
- 50 mg pieces—like the 10 and 20-count bags of Stellar Chews or Classic Gummies—can be cut into quarters of ~12.5 mg or eighths of ~6 mg with relative precision.
- Individual 100 mg pieces are intended for established tolerance. Cutting them into eighths to reach 12.5 mg is possible, but the cut is less exact.
How to cut without guessing
- Use a clean, sharp knife on a cutting board. Not by hand.
- First, cut it in half, then cut each half. Four equal cuts are easier than one "quarter" cut.
- If the gummy is irregular, assume your fractions are too. Round down.
- Store any leftover pieces in their packaging, sealed and away from light.
CBD operates on a different scale
With CBD, the ranges are much broader, and the profile is not psychoactive, so the margin is different:
- 10–25 mg: common entry point.
- 25–50 mg: usual use range.
- 50–100 mg: more established use.
That's why a 100 mg CBD gummy and a 100 mg THC gummy are not comparable, even if the number is identical. They are different substances doing different things.
Your dose today is not your dose always
Four things that influence it:
Tolerance. Increases with frequent use. If you take a break for a few days, it decreases—and many people are surprised when they return to their "usual dose."
Weight and body composition. They influence, but less than commonly believed. Don't calculate by weight.
What you ate. Absorption is better with fat. On an empty stomach, the onset is more abrupt.
What you want from the moment. A quiet afternoon is not the same as a meeting where you will be talking to people.
The first week protocol
If you're calibrating from scratch, this works:
- Day 1: 2.5 mg. Wait two hours. Note what you felt and when.
- Day 3: If day 1 was too low, go up to 5 mg. Wait two hours. Note.
- Day 5: Adjust in increments of 2.5 mg, no more.
- Never go up two steps in the same session.
Yes, take notes. It sounds excessive until in the third week you know exactly what your number is—and you stop guessing forever.
What you take away
- The number on the packaging is the total content, not the dose.
- Beginners: 2.5–5 mg of THC. Period.
- Proper fractioning is the skill that gives you the most benefit.
- CBD and THC are not measured on the same scale, even if they share a unit.
- Two hours wait before re-evaluating. Always.
To understand why that wait is so long, check out how absorption works. And if you're wondering what all the numbers on the packaging mean, that's in how to read the label.
